Is concrete a good idea as a countertop? Concrete is as good or better than all solid surface stone counters, including granite, marble and soapstone. Concrete is highly scratch and stain resistant and extremely durable. It is also unaffected by heat unlike laminate or Corian. Even though it is beautifully honed and finished it is still the same material that bridges, parking structures, and roads are made from. What is the cost of concrete counters? Pricing ultimately comes down to the individual job, but is comparable to other solid surface stone counters. Some details that will affect pricing are color, sink style, aggregate exposure, and edge bevel. Do they crack and stain? Concrete countertops will not crack if fabricated correctly. We have spent a lot of time engineering our mix designs to eliminate cracking as well as increase impermeability, thus creating a very bullet proof, stain resistant final product. On top of that we use the very best penetrating sealer for added protection, followed by layer of beeswax that is buffed. However, if the piece is exposed to heavy use of very acidic products and never maintained, a slight patina can develop. How are they maintained? Maintenance consists of reapplying the beeswax every couple of months, a very easy procedure. What about color and designs? Any color, any design. Fundo Design can design one to fit your needs or meet with you or your designer/architect and go from there. What is the lead-time? Most kitchen countertops take an average of 3 weeks, depending upon the project and distance from studio. What are some other architectural concrete ideas? Fireplace Mantels and surrounds, bathtubs, sinks, bath surrounds, indoor fountains, desk's, and coffee tables, to name a few. What geographicall area does Fundo Design service? The majority of our projects are in the Portland, OR metro area. However projects throughout the Pacific NW is not uncommon.
